What fly are you using?

(That is the last question you should ask!)
This is the question often asked … but not the most important.
Success depends on choices:
  • Food Source – what are they eating
    • Variety of sources=opportunistic (broad search image)
    • Abundance of one source=selective (tunnel vision search image)
  • Depth – where are the fish
  • Rod Weight – 5wt.-6wt. to play the big fish and bring him in quickly
  • Line Type – to get fly to the right zone (dry, intermediate, sinking, hybrid)
  • Tippet – 3x-4x to avoid break-offs, they are not leader shy
  • Presentation – to get the fly in front of the fish, acting like food!
  • FLY – general impression, size, shape, color in that order of priority

NEW WEB FORMS ALLOW NEAR REAL TIME FLY UPDATES

Knowing which flies have been working before you leave home helps you plan your visit. The report is only timely if all anglers fill in the online Census form.
Please use the Member Census tab in Record Visit to record your visit, catch, and fly details. Ask your guests to use the Guest Census to provide catch and fly details.

Paper entries take days or weeks to reach your humble data entry clerk and takes him hours rather than minutes to process! Electronic entries can be filled in on your phone or on your computer when you get home. When the electronic forms are used the information can be reported in near real time.

  • Separate each fly entered with a comma (,)
  • Fly Name – Required
  • Fly Class – Optional but some fly names may fit multiple classes (see adams)
  • Fly Color – Optional but helpful
  • Attributes – Optional but helpful
    • Hook size (#12)
    • Depth fished (8′ or 8-feet)
    • Whatever you think is distinctive like like bh, beadhead, cone head, parachute, …
  • Examples:
    • woolly bugger black #10
    • bh woolly bugger 4′ tan
    • parachute adams
    • #18 adams nymph
    • adams emerger
    • foam parachute adams
… each of the above would be a separate fly
    •  woolly bugger black #10, bh woolly bugger 4′ tan, parachute adams
… multiple flies separated with comma (,)

More than you ever wanted to know!

  • Information is available in days not weeks.
    • I am notified immediately when a Logbook Sign In, Member Census, or Guest Census form is submitted.
    • For non-electronic information I have to wait until I go to the club to take a picture of Logbook entries and get Census sheets. I then take them home and spend an hour or two entering the data manually.
  • Fly details are available much sooner with web forms. Paper reports are processed every 2-4 weeks.
  • ALL Census Forms can be processed in minutes. EACH paper forms take 2-5 minutes for each Census Sheet.
  • We save the environment and $$$. Less paper=fewer trees, less waste.
